Naturalized Legume Species
Below is a list of cool season naturalized legumes that we can recommend for cattle, goats and wildlife plantings in the Cross Timbers. These are all self-reseeding and have been observed to maintain stands if properly managed. Facilitating stand persistence includes the following common sense procedures:
  • Allow sufficient grazing-free growth in late spring to foster adequate seed set
  • Do not turn the soil over (plow or deep disc) since seed banks will bury
  • Avoid soil-applied, pre-emerge broadleaf herbicides with residual effects
  • Ensure plenty of phosphorus (P) in the soil
  • Avoid nitrogen (N) in fertilizer applications, which will favor grass
  • Mow or graze areas heavily in early autumn to reduce warm-season competition
Please see the web links for images, agronomic recommendations and soil requirements.
