Meyer Medal History

The Frank N. Meyer Medal for Plant Genetic Resources is for distinctive service to the National Plant Germplasm System. The award is made as a tribute to Frank N. Meyer who served for 13 years as Agricultural Explorer of the Office of Foreign Seed and Plant Introduction and lost his life in the waters of the Yangtze River.

This award is presented in recognition of his contributions to the plant germplasm collection and use in the U.S. and his dedication and service to humanity through collecting, evaluating, or conserving earth's genetic resources. The award will be to a person who has had an outstanding record of service over a long period of time.

  • 1984-2003: Professor, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station
  • 1975-1984: Associate Professor, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station
  • 1967-1975: Assistant Professor, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station

Current Research Activities

Peanut variety development and release; peanut germplasm collection and preservation; peanut germplasm evaluation, enhancement, and utilization. Co-leader on international efforts to collect, preserve and utilize wild peanut species.

Major Research Interests

My primary research interest is the collection, preservation, evaluation, and utilization of Arachis germplasm-both wild and cultivated. I have (with collaborators) released cultivars which have genes from landrace PI's as well as from wild species of Arachis. Construction of the tetraploid molecular map (RFLP) from my crosses is a major milestone in peanut breeding, in my opinion. (Burrow, Simpson, Starr, Paterson 2001).
