The SAFE (Sports Athletic Field Education) program, developed by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, offers turf management assistance for sports field maintenance personnel. Primary program goals include educating sports field managers to:
    • Maintain the highest quality fields possible
    • Conserve water through proper irrigation principles

      How The Program Works

The Extension Service staff, composed of highly trained individuals who specialize in turfgrass management, soil fertility and irrigation equipment and design, work with sports facilities managers to determine the condition of each field by conducting an audit. They look at such things as irrigation, fertilization, mowing, aerification and water conservation. Participants will receive a copy of their audit report, along with recommended guidelines for proper cultural practices. An audit of the irrigation system will follow to determine frequency and length of time to irrigate for most efficient water use. And, if necessary, a soil sample will be taken to determine soil pH, nutrient availability and any potential problems such as salinity or sodium.

The agency provides unbiased recommendations on the best program for each individual field particapating in the SAFE program.

    What Does This Program Cost?

There is no charge for this service. SAFE participants, however, must agree to implement the recommendations. They will also be asked to display a sign that shows the city or school is participating in this Extension Service educational program. Ongoing communication between participating groups and the county Extension agents is encouraged to evaluate SAFE recommendations.

SAFE Approach to Maintenance, Construction and Renovation

Extension specialists and agents have been providing advice for more than 30 years on proper maintenance, construction and renovation of sports fields. The SAFE maintenance approach involves the following activities:
    • Develop the most effective and economical fertilization program based on soil test results, turfgrass species, environmental conditions and field use.
    • Determine the best mowing height and frequency for each field based on type of sports field, turfgrass species and available mowing equipment.
    • Develop a customized irrigation program tailored to your particular field based on water needs and irrigation system performance.
    • Develop an aerification program for each field to promote proper turfgrass growth and development, using equipment that measures hardness of soil.
    • Encourage proper water use to assure continued high quality water and availability. Water management is a critical part of the best management practices for sports fields.
In addition to maintenance issues, Extension agents and specialists can assist schools and cities with information on any required renovation of their sports fields, including advice on such things as drainage, irrigation equipment repairs or selection of turfgrass varieties.

Assistance is also available in the areas of construction and field safety because improperly constructed fields are difficult to maintain and can be unsafe for players. With proper construction and particularly with proper maintenance, it is possible to reduce the number of injuries that occur on most sports fields.
