Interstitial Cystitis

DISORDER: Interstitial Cystitis
Plant Species: Sorghum, sudangrass, johnsongrass, and sorghum-sudan hybrids.
Causes: Disfunction of the bladder primarily caused by bacteria infection.
Mode of Action: Unknown.
Animal Symptoms: Straining, frequent and urgent urination, but only passing small amounts.
Conditions: More common in mares; it occurs when grazing.
Treatment: Prolonged use (1 month) of strong antibiotic.
Prevention: Avoid grazing sorghum-sudan pastures.
Notes: Not a common problem.
