DISORDER: Lathyrism
Plant Species: Singletary Pea or Caley Pea
Causes: Toxic amino acids in the seed cause neurological syndrome
Mode of Action:
Animal Symptoms: Incoordination of rear legs, exaggerated stepping, reluctance to stand, and inability to rise
Conditions: Seed pods present
Treatment: Remove from peas as soon as symptoms appear; most animals will recover in ~ 4 week
Prevention: Do not graze seed pods
Notes: Most common with horses, but cattle can be susceptible
