DISORDER: Gossypol Toxicity
Plant Species: Cotton seed.
Causes: Gossypol > 0.2%.
Mode of Action: Gossypol is concentrated in the seed of cotton (gives cotton insect resistance). Gossypol, a cardiotoxin, causes destruction of the cardiac muscle.
Animal Symptoms:
Usually sudden death; chronic symptoms include labored breathing.
Conditions: Many factors influence level of gossypol in plant (climate, soils, weather, etc.) Also, some cultivars of cotton have high levels of gossypol than others.
Treatment: None.
Prevention: Test feed or avoid feeding cotton seed meal to young animals.
Notes: Monograstric animals are more susceptible than ruminants. Young animals (<4 mo.) act more like monogastrics.
